Tensions flared during the Philadelphia Phillies' game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night, leading to benches clearing after Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Castellanos was visibly upset after being plunked by Rays pitcher Edwin Uceta, prompting Phillies star Bryce Harper to rush to the mound as the umpires attempted to calm the situation. The benches soon emptied, with both teams crowding the field.
After the game, Castellanos expressed his frustration to the media. Still heated, he said, "I just told [Uceta] that was [expletive]. You're throwing a baseball over 90 MPH and you're frustrated, so you're going to throw at somebody? That's like my two-year-old throwing a fit because I take away his dessert before he's finished."
Castellanos also revealed that he had a feeling he might get hit during the at-bat, sensing Uceta’s frustration over his recent struggles on the mound. Uceta, who entered the game with a 0.75 ERA, had given up three earned runs and inherited two additional runners, nearly doubling his ERA by the time he left the mound.
Harper echoed Castellanos' sentiments, adding, "Yeah, I mean, he hit him on purpose. It's not the game that we play, man. It shouldn't be."
The confrontation seemed to stem from Uceta's poor performance and mounting frustration, but the Phillies were understandably upset that Castellanos was the target. Castellanos, who finished the game 0-for-4 at the plate, was already dealing with a frustrating slump, slashing just .207/.303/.241 at the start of September.
With the incident behind them, the Phillies will look to complete the series sweep against the Rays and continue their push toward the postseason.
