Florida is waking up to the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which has left at least nine people dead. The powerful storm has caused widespread destruction, including severe flooding and tornadoes, as it moves off the state's east coast. Authorities are now working to assess the full extent of the damage.

At least nine people have lost their lives after Hurricane Milton ravaged parts of Florida, leaving residents to wake up and assess the widespread damage.

The hurricane made landfall as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday night near Siesta Key in Sarasota County, unleashing multiple tornadoes, 28-foot waves, fierce winds, heavy rainfall, and a devastating storm surge. In St. Lucie County, four people were killed in a retirement village due to tornadoes spawned by the storm, as a dozen twisters formed in the region within just 20 minutes.

The violent winds also caused a crane to collapse into the Tampa Bay Times building in St. Petersburg, and left the roof of Tropicana Field baseball stadium heavily damaged. Over 3.3 million homes and businesses across Florida have been left without power, with the west-central region suffering the most severe outages.

Evacuation orders were issued to millions, with Bradenton Police Chief Melanie giving a grim warning for those who ignored the advice. “What we’ll probably be finding in the morning are bodies,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Thursday morning.

After making landfall, Milton has since weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and is moving off Florida’s east coast, though residents continue to face intense winds and dangerous storm surges.
