Thousands of earthquakes occur annually in California, though most are minor. Only a small percentage, around 15 to 20, surpass a magnitude of 4.0. California ranks second only to Alaska in the number of yearly earthquakes in North America.

Safety in Earthquakes:

The California Department of Public Health advises the "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" method during an earthquake:

- **Drop**: Get down on your hands and knees to avoid being knocked over.

- **Cover**: Protect your head and neck and take shelter under sturdy furniture or next to an interior wall away from windows.

- **Hold On**: Hold on to your shelter until the shaking subsides, staying prepared to move with it if necessary.
