Bill O'Brien was quick to remind everyone that it was just one win, but what a significant first victory it was for Boston College to kick off the 2024 season — and for the start of the O'Brien era.
Treshaun Ward, playing against his former team, led Boston College to a stunning 28-13 upset over No. 10 Florida State on Monday night, racking up 138 yards of offense, including a 13-yard touchdown reception. Ward, who played at Florida State from 2019 to 2022, rushed for 77 yards and added 61 yards receiving, as the Eagles (1-0, 1-0 ACC) accumulated 263 rushing yards in total.
This win marked a triumphant debut for O'Brien, who took over as head coach in mid-February following Jeff Hafley’s departure to the Green Bay Packers as defensive coordinator. "I'm very proud of these guys," O'Brien said. "They were resilient tonight. To come down here against a team that, in their minds, had to have this win — that's a heck of a statement for BC. But it's just one win."
Boston College's offense was efficient, engineering three long touchdown drives of 71, 68, and 60 yards. On the defensive side, BC's Max Tucker intercepted Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and returned it 58 yards, setting up another touchdown at the goal line.
Florida State, a team that had won five straight games in the series and was considered a strong contender for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, found themselves overmatched both offensively and defensively, dropping to 0-2 for the first time since 2021.
Florida State head coach Mike Norvell reflected on the rough start, saying, "Sick to how this season started. I failed in preparing the team to be able to go out and respond tonight."
