Apalachee High School in Winder was placed on lockdown Wednesday following a reported shooting, which prompted a lockdown across Barrow County schools and possibly resulted in injuries.
Around 10:45 a.m., Apalachee High School administrators alerted parents that the school was in a "hard lockdown" due to reports of gunfire. They urged parents not to come to the school as law enforcement secured the area.
While there were no official reports of injuries, Fox-5 Atlanta observed a person being airlifted to a hospital, and WSB-TV reported a second individual being taken away in an ambulance.
Parents have been allowed to pick up their children from the school.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and FBI agents are on the scene, according to social media posts from those agencies.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp responded on X, stating, "I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state." He added that the state will continue working with local, state, and federal partners as the situation unfolds.
Apalachee High School is one of two high schools in the Barrow County school system. Nearby schools were also placed on lockdown as a precaution, according to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.
